Nigeria's Lost Brands 2

The list of the brands we all grew up to know and which made sense to us in terms of productivity and profitability is endless and just minutes of posting the first 6, I have been bombarded by lots of these wonderful brands that we as a nation have lost due to failed system that has no respects for foundation and structure. Someone queried why I would say Television is responsible for our lost of morals and value and I asked just one question "where did you see a Nigerian girl getting fucked in a  bathtub and walking around naked because she wants popularity?" and he answered TV and I rest my case, but then it is part of the problem.

Don't take my word for it, I like the TV that never sleeps and it is that same TV that makes my 5 years old boy shut his eyes whenever we watch Home videos and Musical videos that should be like that of Asa's 'fire on the mountain' or Onyeka's 'Dancing in the sun'. Before lifetime TV, breast used to be a sacred part of a woman's body, but today its all over your face when you turn on the TV with presenters and actresses who are "role models" setting the pace.

Let's continue with the countdown.....

7. NITEL. So how many hands went up for the use of the Nitel call cards? Not many I guess. The Nigerian Telecommunications Limited was owned by the Nigerian government and are people before some criminally insane persons thought it wise to sell and kill it under the guise of making it work better. It was a thing of pride then to own a landline in your house and it was pretty much affordable and would have made it really easy for the acquisition of GSM lines then when it was introduced. The absence of a workable telecomms sector in Nigeria gave room to MTN and others to stroll in, sell lines for well over N30k as far back as 2001, charge excessive rates and continually rip Nigerians off.
Anyways blame them not, blame the government that destroyed our brand model.
8. NNPC. This is the bull of em all, the alpha dog and the big bad wolf. The sights of queue in the Service stations were never seen in the era when our brands work. It was a normal sight to see the gates of service stations open and people just drive in and get their tanks filled to capacity for little money and the fuel sold last longer then than they do now. Kerosene was a commodity that can be purchased from the service stations but these days, they are sold to a cartel that makes it virtually impossible to get and at a high price. Anyone remember #OccupyNigeria and how the price of fuel rose steadily from N4 to whatever it is today?
9. NPF. This certainly takes the chuckle out of you for all the wrong reasons, I mean this shouldn't really be a brand that is lost given that it is the Nigerian Police Force..... *coughs*. Okay, I think I see why someone will say it is a lost brand. Growing up in the 70s and 80s had its perk because in those periods, Police officers where held in high esteem and their children are proud to be called children of police officers. The uniform then was always on point unlike now when it turns grey and white within the first month even if it was meant to be black. The life of a police officer as it is is one that is seriously plagued by uncertainty, deceit, criminality and force. Well, tell your story.
10. Agriculture. Oh boy, this is one painful story of how from being a manufacturer of food stuff we have resorted to importing everything from Rice to even toothpick. As a Nation seriously blessed with abundant mineral and natural resources, we are supposed to have at least 30% of our GDP credited to Agriculture but that is not to be since the mainstay has shifted from working for what is real to working for all the wrong reasons. Recently, GEJ talked about how agriculture will make lots of Nigerians billionaires and I pray its not on his "not to do list".
11. Education. Oh I cry everytime this issue is discussed. It was a thing of pride to attend schools in Nigeria and our education showed good quality of knowledge and exposure. To attend school in Nigeria and be seen as getting quality education, one must attend a private school because no thanks to a broken brand quality education is a myth. Nigerians pay millions of dollars yearly to get "quality education" overseas.
12. Health. In one word, insane and very irresponsible on the parts of our government who have practically killed the health sector in Nigeria and have made countries like India and others a tourist destination for her people. Presently doctors are on strike and the health facilities we have is a laugh.
13. Textile. Anyone? Well save yourself the painful story.
14. The office of the President. Now this is my favorite but I won't be dwelling on the details, we are aware its a kindergaten class with drooling President and cabinet members.

The list is endless and I may still return to share when you give me that brand we lost, but remember we are still a great people.....
